Film Synopsis

MIDWAY centers on the Battle of Midway, a clash between the American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy which marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. The film, based on the real-life events of this heroic feat, tells the story of the leaders and soldiers who used their instincts, fortitude and bravery to overcome the odds.

Video

Midway is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Elevation Pictures with a 2160p transfer in 2.39:1. The rich color palette and vivid detail are a delight to watch. The detail is very sharp for a heavy CGI effects film. Flesh tones take on neon-esque hues with frequency. Black levels sink low, observant of shadow detail however.

Audio

Midway is in fact a demo-worthy Dolby Atmos audio track that provides the best action listening experience for those with Atmos setups. Planes pan around the soundstage, overhead as much as behind. I enjoyed the balance of atmosphere and discrete object placement. Sound effects traverse the room during the extended battle sequences. Dialog has refining presence with clear vocal character and excellent room penetration.

Special Features
 • Audio Commentary by Roland Emmerich

 • Getting it Right: The Making of Midway is an okay EPK which speaks to the filmmakers' attempts to keep things factual.

 • The Men of Midway focuses on some of the real life characters in the film.

 • Roland Emmerich: Man on a Mission is an interesting EPK which gets into Emmerich's long interest in the subject.

 • Turning Point: The Legacy of Midway  gives some historical analysis of what the Battle of Midway meant.

 • Joe Rochefort: Breaking the Japanese Code is another more historically themed bonus feature which gets into the "Japanese" version of Enigma.

 • We Met at Midway: Two Survivors Remember is an incredibly moving piece with two veterans.

Overall Reaction

MIDWAY 4K UHD presentation with Dolby Vision is a good uptick in quality and the Dolby Atmos audio track is demo-worthy. The bonus features are worth the time, but felt they should have had more.  But I recommended checking out this film.
