RATING 4 out of 5
Only Murders in the Building is ready for its close up as the fourth season gets the Hollywood treatment with lots of celebrity guest stars and twists and turns as the trio tries to solve Sazz’s murder, all anchored by the brilliant trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez that makes for another great mystery for audiences to solve!
Trading in the lights of Broadway for the stars of Hollywood, the first seven episodes of the latest season of Only Murders in the Building lays the groundwork for the series’ biggest and most personal season to date. We see our podcasting trio leaving New York City for Hollywood as the rights of their podcast are being pursued by the movie industry, while trying to piece together while Sazz was murdered. It’s the most expansive season of the series so far, venturing far beyond the Arconia with the movie subplot and bringing in new celebrity guest stars. But at the same time, the core elements of the series are not lost. The mystery itself is rooted in the Arconia, with the West Tower and their inhabitants becoming suspects in Sazz’s murder as the film crew descends on the Arconia. Starting off with an exciting and quick pace, the many plot lines begin to develop over the first four episodes with lots of twists and turns in the mystery that will keep audiences on their toes, with each episode ending with a shocking reveal that will keep audiences eagerly awaiting the next. There is a slight slow down in pacing in the middle of the season, which has some fun self-contained episode ideas, as the mystery is seemingly put to the background. But much like the intelligent writing we have seen over the past three seasons, there is a larger play at work that truly raises the stakes for Charles, Oliver and Mabel that could make for the series’ biggest mystery to date. It’s an ambitious direction for the story to go, but one with a big payoff if it can stick the landing in the final three episodes of the season.
Due to the magnificent trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, I truly hope that Only Murders in the Building is never cancelled. As they have with the first three seasons, Martin, Short and Gomez have an explosive comedic rapport and onscreen chemistry that brings the show to life, making Only Murders in the Building one of the most entertaining and consistent comedies currently airing. Even though we thought we had seen the last of Meryl Streep last season with her character heading off to Hollywood for her big break, Streep’s Loretta returns and she shines whenever she is on screen, proving yet again why she is one of the most talented actresses ever. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Michael Cyril Creighton and Jane Lynch are once again delightful in their recurring roles, with the show adding some serious new talent to the cast. Molly Shannon is hilarious as the Hollywood producer trying to turn the podcast into the next blockbuster hit, while it’s incredibly fun to watch Eugene Levy, Zach Galifiniakis and Eva Longoria portray themselves preparing to play Charles, Oliver and Mabel respectively in the film adaptation. Joining the show as our newest bunch of suspects are the residents of the Arconia’s West Tower portrayed by Richard Kind, Kumail Nanjiani, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Desmin Borges, all of whom fit the quirky comedic energy of the show while having a mysterious quality to them that leaves their characters’ true intentions unknown. And much like previous seasons, there are some surprise appearances from well known actors over the course of the season, helping to build one of the most talented ensemble casts for a comedy television series.
It’s hard to truly judge a murder mystery until the killer is revealed and the mystery is solved, but even with three episodes left in the season, it is evident that Only Murders in the Building continues to be one of the most enticing and enjoyable comedy series currently airing. The writers take their most ambitious swing to date, juggling multiple plot threads at once while giving our trio their most personal case to date as they try to solve Sazz’s murder, weaving an intricate mystery that makes for yet another season of this series’ thrilling and hilarious storytelling. With Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez once again shining in the lead roles with their dynamite on screen chemistry, the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building introduces a great new plethora of suspects, mysteries, and twists and turns, resulting in yet another wildly entertaining mystery to get lost in.
