In '2067;, Earth is on the verge of collapse. After years of doing too little to reverse climate change, plant life is extinct and there is a dramatic reduction in available oxygen. The survival of humanity is threatened by a fatal “oxygen sickness” – as manufactured oxygen, the only source of breathable air, is making millions sick. With no cure in sight, humanity looks to the future, in the hope that people are still alive and have a solution to the O2 crisis. Chronicorp, the world’s leading supplier of synthetic oxygen, has spearheaded this project, building a quantum time machine that pings the future in search of a connection with their descendants. They receive a response: a message from 400 years in the future that simply reads “Send Ethan Whyte”. Unwittingly, Ethan, a reclusive utility worker, barrels into the future as humanity and his sick wife’s last hope. He arrives in a new world... completely alone. As he draws closer to the truth and uncovers an unthinkable conspiracy, he is faced with the ultimate question - who sent the message? And is there a way to save humanity and the woman he loves?
Smit-McPhee plays Ethan, an arrogant and selfish underground tunnel worker who embarks on a journey through time that tests his faith in humanity. Kwanten is Jude Mathers, a tunnel rat and Ethan’s protector who believes only humans can control their own fate.
“I grew up in the forest in Australia. My days were filled with exploring rivers and trees and caves – it was the only life I knew as a child,” comments Seth Larney. “With everything that is happening around us in the world today, the environmental crisis, our deforestation of the planet for greed in the face of catastrophic climate change – the fear that future generations may not have the same privilege, terrifies me.”
The director continues, “I also grew up a huge fan of the classic sci-fi movies of the 70’s and 80’s. These character-driven epic adventures showed me that there is more out there in the universe than what I could see with just my own eyes. Stories that suggested we are part of something bigger than ourselves, that we are all connected, that the great human journey is worth sharing together… For me filmmaking is an opportunity to have a conversation about something important – in this case our faith in our own humanity; our ability to affect change as individuals in the face of genuine fear; and how we learn to forgive those who came before us, and who’ve left destruction in their path.”
“With '2067' Seth Larney has created a unique and visually breathtaking world,”says A71 Releasing Inc. CEO Justin Rebelo. “It feels uncannily prescient right now against the backdrop of wildfires blazing around the world, while fundamentally being a really entertaining sci-fi adventure that keeps audiences in suspense until the end. With the incredible leading cast of Kodi Smit-McPhee and Ryan Kwanten, '2067' is a fantastically character driven and fully satisfying cinematic adventure that we are really excited to share with Canadian audiences.”
'2067' was produced by Lisa Shaunessy, Jason Taylor and Kate Croser. Executive Producers include Michael Rymer and Alexandra Burke. The film received production funding from Screen Australia, in association with South Australian Film Corporation, Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund and Screen NSW and was financed with support from Elevate Production Finance, Grumpy Sailor, Spectrum Films and Cumulus VFX.
