Kept locked inside the house by her father, 7-year-old Chloe (Lexy Kolker) lives in fear and fascination of the outside world, where Abnormals create a constant threat – or so she believes. When a mysterious stranger offers her a glimpse of what’s really happening outside, Chloe soon finds that while the truth isn’t so simple, the danger is very real.
Writer-directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein bring multiple layers of misdirection in this film. The story features Chloe, aged 7, living with her dad (Emile Hirsch) in a filthy, ramshackle house with boarded-up windows. Chloe is not allowed to leave the house, ever. This becomes problematic when she’s tempted by Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern) and his ice cream truck.
Chloe does leave the home and visits Mr. Snowcone. From there, I will leave it up to you to view. I will give you a hint though. As the title suggests, it’s about people who don’t quite feel they belong. Despite a limited budget, the film doesn’t disappoint on acting, visuals, music and sound.
