Summary (out of 5)

George Clooney plays Augustine Lofthouse, a renowned scientist living at an Arctic observatory. After a mysterious disaster wipes out most of Earth and the base is evacuated, Augustine stays in place and attempts to make contact with the spaceship Aether. Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Demián Bichir, Kyle Chandler, and Tiffany Boone are astronauts returning to earth after years on a planet that sustains human life. Augustine is all alone, but a little girl (Caoilinn Springall) is forgotten during the evacuation. He must care for her and get to a remote station to warn the astronauts to turn back.

The script, based on the 2016 novel, 'Good Morning Midnight' by Lily Brooks-Dalton, was adapted by Mark L. Smith, who did the script for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s incident-jammed "The Revenant". I was so looking forward to watching this film but I felt the story was under-developed. I just couldn't get into it. The film struggles to gain momentum as it inadvertently cuts back and forth between life on earth and the crew members aboard the Aether.  THE MIDNIGHT SKY is not a perfect film but it is visually beautiful and has amazing practical special effects.  Streaming on Netflix December 23.
