By opening one man's eyes to the world... he opened his own. Robert De Niro (in an Oscar®-nominated performance for Best Actor) and Robin Williams star in this powerful, true story of a maverick doctor and the patients whose lives he changes. Williams plays Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy research physician who uses an experimental drug to "awaken" the catatonic victims of a rare disease. De Niro co-stars as Leonard, the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, as the exuberant patient reveals life's simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the introverted doctor. Encouraged by Leonard's stunning recovery, Sayer administers the drug to the other patients. The story of their friendship during this emotional journey is a testament to both the tenderness of the human heart and the strength of the human soul. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Rating 4 out of 5

Robin Williams and Penny Marshall are both best known for the laughter they brought to audiences, but their talents extended beyond that. Williams was, in addition to being one of the most talented comedic actors who would leave audiences dying of laughter, an exceptional dramatic actor with memorable performances in films like Good Will Hunting, Insomnia and Dead Poets Society that have defined his legacy, while Marshall was an outstanding director in bringing to life human stories with notable films like A League of Their Own and The Preacher’s Wife. Naturally, it comes as no surprise that their collaboration in Awakenings showcases the best of their combined talents, delivering a deeply moving and tender dramatization of what could only be described as a miracle.

Fictionalizing the autobiographical memoir of Oliver Sacks, the film tells the story of a doctor who is able to awaken a group of catatonic patients with a drug and follows the group of patients as they acclimatize to a new world decades after when they lost responsiveness and the doctor who made this discovery. As the screenplay details, the events that this film is based on are unexplainable, something that can only be described as a miracle beyond human comprehension, and this sense of wonder is never lost in Marshall’s direction. Guiding the entire film with a tenderness, never overplaying the moments for dramatic effect, Marshall’s direction instead allows the natural emotional response of the characters to play out without pomp and circumstance. By doing so, this more natural exploration of such an incredible medical event in Steven Zaillan’s screenplay allows the magic of the events to remain instead of trying to scientifically explain what happened, but championing the moving human story to create an emotional experience for viewers that they won’t soon forget. Undeniably uplifting in its storytelling, balancing the joy and sadness of the events as these patients struggle to adapt to the new world they find themselves in, Marshall’s direction finds a happiness despite the story’s ending, leaving the audience with the sentiment, “don’t be sad its over, but be happy that it happened.”

Though, it is the lead performances of Williams and Robert De Niro that are the highlights of the film. Williams brings an undeniable warmth and passion to the film as Malcolm Sayer, the neurologist who discovers the medical miracle for the patients, endlessly championing his patients and their quality of life despite the pushback from the hospital administration more concerned about the cost and legality of the situation. It is an exceptional performance from Williams that once again showcases his dramatic range with that endless twinkle that has defined every performance he gave, effortlessly matching Marshall’s tone for the film.

De Niro is nothing short of fantastic in his Academy Award nominated performance as Leonard Lowe, the main patient that awakens from his catatonic state. With a curiosity and desire to live that is present in every scene of the film, it’s a far quieter and more emotionally vulnerable performance than audiences expect from De Niro, but one that tugs on the heartstrings at every moment of the film. From his softer beginnings as Leonard rediscovers his mobility and the world with an endless optimism and hope, a cruel sadness as his freedom is restricted by the fear of something going wrong as he ventures out into the world, to the devastating slide back into his catatonic state, De Niro will not leave a dry eye among viewers.

As magical as the true events it is based on, Penny Marshall’s Awakenings is a gem of film. Led by two sensational performances from Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, this true story medical miracle is a heartwarming drama that nourishes the soul and allows Awakenings to conjure up an unforgettable experience that is a must see for all who have not seen this classic 1990 film.

disc review

Visual: 5/5

Audio: 4/5

Bonus Features: 1/5

For its 35th anniversary, Awakenings gets a glorious 4K restoration, and the results are stunning. Maintaining a healthy amount of grain the image, the Dolby Vision/HDR upgrade of the film is stunning to look at with its immense details and warm picture quality. While there are not a lot of colours in the film’s production design, the whites in the costume designs pop with a crisp vibrancy, the detail in the sets are heightened from details on the hospital walls, the costuming and Dr. Sayer’s home, and the blacks have a richness that adds depth to the film. It’s really hard to critique it as this is exactly that transfer you want to, other than to say it is perfect restoration from a visual standpoint.

The 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of Awakenings comes with three separate audio tracks: Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD MA 5.1, and the film’s original DTS-HD MA 2.0 track. Given the nature of the film, there is not a lot of sound that benefits from the Atmos track other than Randy Newman’s beautiful musical score. It is a great sounding audio mix for sure, but with Awakenings being a quieter drama, there is nothing that truly allows the Atmos mix to pop, but the original 2.0 track sounds wonderful. Regardless of the audio mix viewers pick, they all sound great and help to bring this film to life.

While the 4K transfer itself is stunning, the same cannot be said for the bonus features for this 35th anniversary edition. All that is included are two brief archival features, one being a making of and the other an interview with the cast and crew, which offer little insight into the making of the film, and the film’s theatrical trailer. It’s an improvement over the previous Blu-Ray which had no bonus features, and it is easy to understand why there is not a more robust legacy featurette included with the passing of both Penny Marshall and Robin Williams who could not reflect on the film for this anniversary. But as a whole, minus the slip cover, there is nothing of note in terms of bonus features to accompany this release. Overall, for big fans of this film who have the 4K capability in their home theatre setup or for fans, it's an excellent restoration that warrants the purchase even if there is little to offer outside the disc’s great technical specs.
