Kat Valdez (Lopez) is half of the sexiest celebrity power couple on Earth with hot new music supernova Bastian (Maluma, making his feature-film debut). As Kat and Bastian's inescapable hit single, "Marry Me," climbs the charts, they are about to be wed before an audience of their fans in a ceremony that will be streamed across multiple platforms.

Divorced high-school math teacher Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson) has been dragged to the concert by his daughter Lou (Chloe Coleman, Big Little Lies) and his best friend (Sarah Silverman). When Kat learns, seconds before the ceremony, that Bastian has cheated on her with her assistant, her life turns left as she has a meltdown on stage, questioning love, truth and loyalty. As her gossamer world falls away, she locks eyes with a stranger—a face in the crowd.

If what you know lets you down, then perhaps what you don't know is the answer, and so, in a moment of inspired insanity, Kat chooses to marry Charlie. What begins as an impulsive reaction evolves into an unexpected romance. But as forces conspire to separate them, the universal question arises: Can two people from such different worlds bridge the gulf between them and build a place where they both belong?

film review

Rating 4.5 out of 5

Jennifer Lopez is one of the romantic comedy genre’s most notable leading ladies, with hit films like The Wedding Planner, Maid in Manhattan, and The Backup Plan on her resume. Her musical talents, which have no limits, have also extended to the big screen with her portrayal of Selena Quintanilla in the biopic Selena, and her dazzling musical debut in last year’s Kiss of the Spider Woman, where she lets her global music superstar talents soar. But, it was Marry Me that finally saw her music talents and romantic comedy combined in this delightful romantic comedy that calls back to some of the emulates the tone of some of the genre’s greatest films from Nora Ephron and Richard Curtis.

Working with themes of celebrity and the difference between the public image and a private personal life into the romantic comedy genre, in the tale of a music superstar who spontaneously marries an ordinary stranger in front of millions of fans, and figures out the romance after the fact, Marry Me is a pure entertainment that wears its heart proudly. The essence of the script is a modern updating of Notting Hill, adding in social media and the lack of privacy with celebrities in today’s world to the commentary, and while the screenplay does not rise to the historic heights of Notting Hill, the film captures that old school romantic comedy feeling. Full of meaningful discussions about relationships and public perception, heartwarming tender moments and some good natured laughs that never once have to go for a gross out gag, Marry Me is refreshing and truly delightful from start to finish for viewers of all ages.

In terms of casting, Lopez and Wilson could not be any more different from each other: Lopez with her larger than life superstar presence and Owen with his more humble, sly comedic talents. This stark difference extends to their characters of Kat and Charlie, but the saying that opposites track could not be any more truer than in the chemistry between Lopez and Wilson. From their first scene together, there is an understated spark between them that builds into a playful honeymoon phase, and eventually into something more meaningful and tender, Lopez and Wilson make for a great pairing. Lopez herself is excellent as Kat, giving a lived in performance that captures the loneliness that comes with the spotlight and the yearning to have something real and meaningful in life. Wilson is sweet, bringing a great mix of comedy and kindness to Charlie, while Sarah Silverman, John Bradley and Michelle Buteau all conjure up some great comedic moments in their supporting roles that tick off all the requirements of the romantic comedy genre.

Naturally, the highlight of a J Lo musical romantic comedy is the soundtrack of new original songs performed by J Lo. From the title track duet “Marry Me” between Lopez and Maluma, “Church” with its cheeky lyrics, to “After Love (Part 1)”, there is no shortage of energetic romantically infused tracks that perfectly match the tone and energy of the film. But, it is the ballad “On My Way (Marry Me)” that is the highlight of the film, perfectly encapsulating Kat’s journey over the course of the film that when paired with Lopez’s incredible vocals, creates an anthem that will have audiences wanting to sing along.

While it doesn’t break new ground for the romantic comedy genre, there is no denying the inherent sweetness and joyful nature of Marry Me, that when paired with the effective pairing of Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson and the soundtrack of new original Jennifer Lopez tracks, makes for a great date night movie.

disc review

Visual: 3.5/5

Audio: 4/5

Bonus Features: 3/5

There is no doubt that the 4K UHD Blu-Ray format can make any movie look better, and Marry Me definitely boasts a good picture. The detail on Kat’s costumes during the concert sequences shows immense detail, the colours have a vibrancy compared to the deep blacks, and there is a crisp freshness to the picture. Though, at the same time, the HDR does make the over use, and at many times unnecessary use, of fish eye lens shots stick out, which actually distracts from the great image quality.

Where this 4K UHD Blu-Ray shows its true power is in the new Dolby Atmos audio track. There is a great clarity that gives great power to the film’s original songs, delivering some showstopping musical moments that showcases the music superstar talent of Lopez as she belts out the film’s great original songs, but also finds a tenderness in the more romantic moments between Kat and Charlie where the audio track gives great space between the dialogue and music.

While this new 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of Marry Me does not add any additional special features to what was offered on the previous Blu-Ray release, it is a good offering of bonus features. The majority of the behind the scenes featurettes give insight from Lopez, director Kat Coiro and producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, discussing the development of the film. Ranging from the music, the visual design of the film, to casting, there are some great insights for fans of the as to the choices the creative team made in telling this film, while also touching on the personal connection Lopez has to this story and her dedication to give a truly authentic performance. There are also a handful of deleted scenes, an entertaining gag, a lyric video for one of the film’s songs “On My Way”, and a commentary track featuring Coiro and Goldsmith-Thomas. They may not be the most riveting special features, but for anyone looking to learn more about Marry Me, the selection on this 4K UHD Blu-Ray has exactly what you are looking for.
