For over two decades, there has been one comedy franchise that has consistently made me laugh; that I habitually revisit clips of on Youtube when I am having a crappy day just for a pick me up. I have seen every season of the show, every movie, every stunt these guys have ever done. That is, and will forever be Jackass.

Listen, you either like Jackass or you don’t. There isn’t really an in-between. It’s a type of comedy that is both wildly immature but proudly wears that heart on its sleeve, which is why I have never stopped loving it. I have grown up with Johnny Knoxville and the gang, so to see a title called ‘Best and Last’, puts both a lump in my throat but a smile on my face. The time is right to let these gents sail into the sunset and wrap up this wildly funny franchise after 25+ years.

The best are back - Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius, Steve-O, ‘Danger’ Ehren, Dave Englund, Jason ‘Wee-Man’ Acuna & Preston Lacy - along with the new blood who were introduced in 2022’s Jackass Forever. Both a greatest hits package and one last feature with the old gang, the film runs a lean 1 hour and 32 minutes, with only about 50% of the film being new stunts and segments. The rest feels like a compilation featuring unaired segments from the original show, along with what seems to be their favourite stunts and fan favourites from the four previous films.

Jackass: Best and Last isn’t perfect - none of this films have been - but the intention has never been to be the cream of the comedy crop. It’s always been about the stunts pushing the cast and us the audience to a near breaking point from both shock and disgust, all the while trying to get a boisterous laugh, and Best and Last does just that. Stunts like ‘Escape Room from Hell’ or ‘Robot Prostate Exam’ not only remind us of how unhinged this gang is, but how willing they are to get a laugh from the crowd, even if it means losing your dignity somewhere along the line. My personal favourite by a mile was ‘Electric Balance Beam’ featuring new’ish cast member Poopies, which brought tears to my eyes because I was laughing so hard.

With that being said, this felt like a true communal experience on opening night - where fans of the franchise from ages 18 to seemingly up to 50 were in that theatre with me, uncontrollably laughing - and that’s what Jackass has always been about. As the film started, yelling collectively with a group of strangers “HI, I’M JOHNNY KNOXVILLE AND WELCOME TO JACKASS!’ I found myself getting choked up. We laughed, some of us cried (....***cough-me-cough***...), and it felt like a perfect way for a generation to say goodbye to a group of guys and a pop culture phenomenon that has had a lasting impression on us well into adulthood. Even as I sit here writing that, I have tears in my eyes and a thankful heart because through all the highs and lows of adolescence, college, my hard partying 20-something years and now well into fatherhood and nearing 40, Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass Gang have brought me nothing but joy. And with that being said, take your bow gents, you have earned it. We will miss you.
