The Rivals of Amziah King is a singular cinematic experience that blends an almost lyrical tale of community and beekeeping with a tense revenge thriller led by two fantastic performances from Matthew McConaughey and newcomer Alice LookingGlass, making Andrew Patterson’s sophomore feature a breathtaking film unlike anything else you will experience this year.
Premiering last year at the 2025 edition of the SXSW Film Festival, the world of movie critics have been abuzz about The Rivals of Amziah King ever since. Stellar reviews and nothing but universal praise for the lead performances of Matthew McConaughey and Alice LookingGlass, everyone referred to it as one of the best films of the year… though it sadly took about a year and a half to be released for the rest of the world to have the chance to experience the new classic from writer and director Andrew Patterson (who wrote the film under the pseudonym James Montague). And not only does the film live up to the hype, it's a stunning indie darling that creates a magical movie going experience like no other that blends stunning cinematography, infectious original music and riveting story of community, mentorship, revenge and beekeeping, championed by outstanding performances from the entire cast that makes for one of the best and most unforgettable films of the year.
From the film’s opening sequence which features McConaughey’s Amziah and his musician friends break into a bluegrass folk music performance at the local drive in while ordering food, its evident that not only is The Rivals of Amziah King a unique film unlike anything audiences have ever seen before, but it immediately ensnares the senses. Introducing audiences to Amziah’s beekeeping and honey production operation and re-uniting him with his former foster daughter Kateri, Patterson begins painting the picture of the small community that Amziah has built in his hometown through music, food and honey. With impromptu musical performances of Amziah’s bluegrass group, potluck dinners, or the wondrous sequences where Amziah teaches Kateri how to tend to the bees and produce honey, there is a down to earth quality in Patterson’s direction and writing that captures a special magic. Aided by the beautiful cinematography of Miguel I. Littin-Menz which captures the beauty of Alabama and the wonderful lighting of the sun to deliver stunning shot after shot, strong editing from Patrick J. Smith, and an infectious original score and selection of original songs by Erick Alexander, Jared Bulmer and Ben Hardesty that become a character unto itself, there is cinematic magic in the air as the worldbuilding occurs on screen. Under Patterson’s guiding hand, everything in the first half of the film harmoniously interlocks and leaves audiences on cloud nine as they are treated to a distinct narrative vision that reminds them of the immense power of cinematic storytelling.
As the film enters its second half, there is a jarring tonal change as the story transitions into a revenge driven crime thriller. Gone is the magical enchantment of the first half as Patterson finds a scrappy tale of revenge as Kateri tries to reclaim what was stolen from her and Amziah. With this narrative change, Patterson expands the scope of the world he has created, exploring the startling darkness and corruption within the honey producing world while maintaining the grounded and small-scale storytelling of the first half. Kateri is faced with dire odds, forcing her character to evolve and channel the newfound strength that her rekindling with Amziah awakened in her, while the writing gives a standout moment to Jake Horowitz’s Remmick in a brilliant heist sequence at the end of the second act.
There is no doubt some moral issues of the screenplay in the film’s second half that don’t sit right as the story nears its conclusion. The lengths that Kateri goes to obtain her justice beg the question whether she is truly the heroine that Patterson frames her as or not, as her actions are not something that viewers can easily deem as an acceptable course of action. Though instead of exploring this moral dilemma, Patterson quickly glosses over Kateri’s actions with the simple justification of the ends justifying the means. But, given the soaring first half of the film and the strong character driven storytelling that continues through its second half, and the ultimate resolution of Kateri’s struggles, it is easy to forgive Patterson’s shortcomings and quick resolution in his writing. It may be a tall ask he presents to viewers to accept the drastic lengths of Kateri’s actions, but as a whole what Patterson crafts in The Rivals of Amziah King is transcendent storytelling that will remain with viewers for a long time, especially with that magical final scene that echoes the brilliance of the film’s first half.
Patterson’s writing and direction lays the runway, but it is the lead performances of McConaughey and LookingGlass that make The Rivals of Amziah King the revelation that it is. McConaughey's return to feature acting is not only excellent as he soars on screen as Amziah King, bringing a Southern down to Earth good nature to the character as he mentors Kateri in the ways of beekeeping and brings her into the loving community he has helped create, but is unequivocally one of the best performances of his career. With a calming charm and impressive musical performance of the bluegrass songs, McConaughey instantly reminds audiences why they fell in love with him as an actor decades ago. LookingGlass is excellent alongside McConaughey, developing a tender bond between these two characters that allows the first half of the film to find its magic, but when she is pushed to desperation and takes matters into her own hand in the second half, she finds a powerful strength that guides the tonal change in the story and grips the audience’s attention as Kateri heads down her darker path. It’s nothing short of an incredible acting debut that confirms LookingGlass as a serious talent whose career you don’t want to miss going forward.
The supporting cast is never short of talented or striking performances, fitting in perfectly alongside McConaughey and LookingGlass to ensure every moment in the screenplay rings with honesty and passion. Kurt Russell gives a scene chewing performance as the ruthless businessman with his eyes set on expanding his corporate control of the honeybee and farming sector at the expense of the small setups, never for a second mincing his towering presence and delivering a controlled yet chilling villain for the film. While in a smaller role, Jake Horowitz as Remmick gives the film one of its best moments alongside LookingGlass in the second half as he brings a deeply vulnerable and moving reflection of his character’s life that recaptures that light and emotion of the first act in an unforgettable scene.
Orchestrating a gorgeous melody of folk music, revenge and honey, Andrew Patterson delivers a one of a kind cinematic experience with The Rivals of Amziah King that not only confirms his brilliance as a writer and director, but results in one of the best films of the year. With the soaring performances of Matthew McConaughey and Angelina LookingGlass at the centre of the film bolstering the excellent screenplay, paired with gorgeous cinematography and infectious original music that captures the heart and soul of the story, Andrew Patterson not only delivers one of the most unforgettable cinematic experiences of the entire year with The Rivals of Amziah King, but gives birth to a new American classic that will be remembered for years to come!
