Canadian Indie Filmmakers The Butler Brothers Bring THE LAST ANNIVERSARY to Vancouver’s Rio Theatre June 10

Vancouver, BC - Canadian filmmaking duo Brett and Jason Butler, known collectively as The Butler Brothers, will bring their latest feature, the slow-burn apocalyptic thriller THE LAST ANNIVERSARY, to The Rio Theatre in Vancouver on June 10 as part of the film’s ongoing national theatrical tour.
Select filmmakers and cast members are expected to attend for a post-screening Q&A.
Known for their fiercely independent approach to filmmaking and grassroots distribution, The Butler Brothers have spent the past decade quietly building one of Canada’s most ambitious independent film operations through their production company Substance Production and distribution label Tiny Cabin Pictures.
Their latest feature stars Ry Barrett (In A Violent Nature), alongside Jessica Vano (Cult Hero, Beyond the Chamber of Terror) and Jesse McQueen (The Texas Cheerleader Murder Plot).
Set on the eve of the apocalypse, THE LAST ANNIVERSARY follows a reunion between former friends at the abandoned hotel where Tom and Aubrey were married ten years earlier. What begins as one final night of celebration slowly unravels into paranoia, buried resentment, and confrontation surrounding the mysterious disappearance of their Maid of Honor on the night of the wedding.
The film blends psychological tension, emotional unease, and creeping dread into an atmospheric chamber piece that continues the filmmakers’ tradition of genre storytelling grounded in character and discomfort rather than formula.
THE LAST ANNIVERSARY World Premiered at the 2025 Macabro Film Festival in Mexico, followed by its Midwestern U.S. Premiere at the 2026 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival.
Ry Barrett’s involvement adds another layer of excitement for genre audiences following the global breakout success of In A Violent Nature, where his portrayal of the killer Johnny helped turn the film into one of the most talked-about independent horror releases in recent years. Barrett will reprise the role in In A Violent Nature 2, arriving in 2026.
Across their careers, The Butler Brothers have directed, written, and produced ten feature films while producing or executive producing an additional five projects. Their work has screened internationally and been distributed across platforms including Amazon Prime, Tubi, Apple TV, Roku Channel, Plex, Hollywood Suite, Fawesome, Revry, and more.
In addition to THE LAST ANNIVERSARY, the duo recently completed the horror-comedy Starsuckers and are currently in pre-production on the thriller Umbilical while developing multiple television and streaming projects.
